Bikram’s Full Interview On ABC: Lawsuits, Sexism, And Money

Bikram is at it again, this time in the limelight discussing his former copyright lawsuits. ABC interviewed him recently, and WOW did it leave an impression.
Bikram has claimed that his specific sequence of postures are patented and protected by law; however, after the interview made here by ABC, a court ruled that they in fact cannot be
This was a disappointment to Bikram to say the least, as he is now forced to sit by and watch as others use his flow in whatever way they see fit.
This interview…definitely made me reluctant to even take a Bikram class in the future. I don’t like the idea of his franchise giving him more and more money, and I don’t like the way he treats his paying students.
The idea of calling someone a “bitch” or a “whore” during or after class (as described in the video) is absolutely ridiculous to me. Bikram is not a God sitting upon a throne. He is just a business man rehashing postures invented thousands of years ago. He’s not even original. Granted, he is responsible for bringing Yoga to the West, but that does not mean that we should bow down to him.

She claims that during class, Bikram made derogatory comments about women and homosexuals, saying, “Women are bitches and whores. They’re here for one thing, and that’s to make babies.”

After completing seven weeks of the nine-week course, Pandhora said she confronted Bikram.

“I walked up to him, and I said ‘Bikram, You’re breaking my heart.’ That’s what I said to him. ‘Why are you preaching hate when there’s already so much hatred in the world?’” said Williams, who claimed his response to her was, “‘We don’t sell love here, you f**king black bitch. Get out.’”

I can appreciate that Bikram is at least a real guy and you’ll never catch him doing something “out of character” (like John Friend did)  but I hope that in the future, the Yoga community will be able to recognize that it is not right to slander students as they come to work on their bodies and minds. And just so you know, if you want that, you can probably do it for far cheaper somewhere else.
I can only hope that in the future, we can move away from people that insult others in the name of Yoga, and at least move towards something that is constructive. After all…isn’t that the point of Yoga?

Thanks for posting this video, Matt. I had not seen this, and it was very interesting:)

Great post Matt just confirmed what I always thought “This guy has his head so far up his own arse he can’t see!’ Sorry for the language, I find him disgusting and vile. I would not ever recommend bikram as yoga, as he and it, are not representative of what Yoga means.

The first time I did a Bikram class it was ALL the poses I had previously learned in other forms like Ashtanga…it was just sometimes in a different order. He really can’t claim any copyright at all.

So you take one woman’s word? The woman who is suing Bikram for mega-bucks? The woman who shamlessly decided to litigate her case in the media instead of the courts? I know this blog is biased, but ignorant too? Perhaps.

    • yogamatt

How do you litigate in the media? You litigate in courts, the media covered it. Pretty simple.

I agree with Yogamatt, but lets say she’s lying. He is still an assohl, his all great and enlightened. All American’s are stupid including the interviewer and the only way they become smarter, more enlightened is through Bikram thats the biggest bull I ever heard. First off all if your truly enlightened then your not bragging about it. He is the Warren Jeff of Yoga and all of these people are suckers.

he is responsible for bringing yoga franchises to the west, but yoga was here long before Bikram Choudhury.

To me, this sounds like a case of a ” Ferrari- collecting Yogi” living his American Dream.

Bikram is NOT responsible for bringing yoga to “the West” (unless you talk about the west coast of USA) may be that.
